Green Tourism at The Lion Hotel
At the Lion Hotel we are committed to running our business in a sustainable green manner, trying to minimise the environmental, economic and social impacts to ensure that Mid Wales is kept the way it is for the future.
In our very first year we have achieved a Silver Award with the Green Tourism Business Scheme.
Local, Organic, Fair Trade
Hearty breakfasts and home made evening meals are offered at the Lion Hotel, made using locally sourced ingredients. We try to source from local shops and business'. We have a small vegetable garden at the Lion Hotel and through the summer months we use all our own lettuce and herbs and other produce where possible. The eggs on our menu are from our own hens in the garden and guests can have the choice of quail eggs from our Aviary.
Even our soap in the guest rooms are from a local supplier in Crossgates. Our guest room toilet paper and tissues are made from 100% recycled materials and are waste bin liners are biodegradable.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
The aim of all aspects of the Lion Hotel is to 'reduce, reuse, recycle'. We try to use large containers to refill smaller dispensers, our toilet paper and tissues in the quest rooms are 100% recycled and the waste bin liners are biodegradable. Food waste is composted in our compost bins in the garden and some food waste is fed to the hens! We use the local council recycling bags and recycle plastic, paper and cardboard, cans are saved and are collected by a Greyhound Rescue Centre.
Empty ink cartridges and old clothing and bedding is collected by the Primary School in the village and even used stamps and milk bottle tops are saved for charity.
We use the bottle bank in the pub car park, charity shops to recycle materials and garden waste also goes to our compost.
We encourage our guests to re-use towels if they are happy to do so, not to leave the televisions on standby and to switch off lights when they leave their rooms.
We are continually looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact and will continue to monitor water and energy consumption.
